BROWARD HEALTH ATHLETIC TRAINING PROGRAM
CARING FOR OUR YOUNGEST ATHLETES
Founded over 20 years ago by Dr. Daniel Kanell, The Broward Health Athletic Training Program is one of the largest and strongest young athlete programs in the country. Through education, supervision and treatment the program currently cares for a majority of the over 14,500 high school athletes that play sports from the 20 Broward schools.
Frank Walters, PhD ATC, Director of Sports Medicine for Broward Health, and his staff of over 20 licensed and nationally certified athletic trainers help care for Broward’s youngest competitive athletes. The athletic trainers can be found on the sidelines of all types of school sports events. The high schools rely on the staff to provide event coverage for their athletes. Special events like soccer, volleyball, softball and football tournaments as well as cross-country and track events also turn to the Athletic Training Program for athletic trainers.
SPORTS PRE-PARTICIPATION PHYSICALS
Pre-participation physicals are offered for student athletes each year. The physicals are conducted by physicians, athletic trainers, physical therapists and nurses at the Sports Medicine Center and other Broward Health facilities and community locations.
GAME AND PRACTICE SUPERVISION
To minimize injury or re-injury among student athletes athletic trainers provide on-site, pre-practice and game preparation. The trainers attend all practices, home games and tournaments, providing supervision as well as padding, bracing and on-site treatment of athletic injuries for all school-sponsored sports.
CARE AND TREATMENT
A complete network provides for the diagnosis and care of injuries at locations throughout Broward. Advanced imaging services such as MRI, CT and PET scans are available as needed. The Sports Medicine Center physicians provide the latest non-surgical treatments as well as the most current, least invasive surgical methods. Sports medicine therapists provide treatment for overuse conditions such as muscle strain, tendinitis, shin splints and tennis elbow.
INDIVIDUAL ATTENTION
Athletic trainers develop individualized programs to help athletes get back in the game. They provide recommendations for taping, padding and bracing and prescribe conditioning programs to help strengthen the athlete.
REHABILITATION
To promote full recovery, the Broward Health Athletic Training Program offers rehabilitation services to help athletes regain strength and agility, and prevent re-injury.
